Following the Jasień

Setanta Ballesty

Does the way we treat rivers reflect how we treat ourselves?

The Jasień river is one of the 19 rivers of  Łódź that used to be the lifeblood of this industrial city, but now lie forgotten under the city’s surface. This project explores how the city's care can be summarised by the way it treats its rivers: as something to be buried or forgotten within the city centre, as an amusement for the affluent or as a community space for those on the fringes of society.

It also explores my own fascination with bodies of water and how I turn to them for comfort.

The river, visible or invisible, becomes a reflection of my own desire for the water.
