Two Sticks and a Stone

Matthew Bednarek

What does it mean to exist in a place that refuses to fully reveal itself? In Łódź, I found myself drawn to blank facades and windows that felt closed, distant, unreadable… surfaces that seemed to resist being known. By isolating fragments and returning to patterns of unfamiliarity, I stopped trying to enter the city and started sitting with the feeling of being kept outside it.  This in-betweenness felt honest. Not a city observed, but a city that wouldn't let me in, mirroring something I already carried. With that, I explored how absence, erasure and architectural surfaces can mirror a sense of emotional distance and disconnection.
