I’d rather get hit by a car
Maj Perko
Why do we build underpasses?
The underpass, as a concept, is a failure from its conception, as it caters far more to cars than pedestrians. It forces people to choose the lesser evil, whether that be waiting a minute and a half for a green light, jaywalking, or descending into the land of moles, ants and worms. In Łódź, underpasses are frequently utilised in the design of public space, often also integrating tram stations. Pedestrians are therefore forced to unnecessarily endanger themselves, being marginalised in traffic or having to risk their safety in the underworld. In I’d rather get hit by a car I explore the underpass as a failed concept, with an emphasis on the alien feeling upon entering one.
