Paradise Lost
Haining Yang
Do you have a paradise that you want to escape, but keep looking back to?
In Łódź, Poland, the abandoned factories and decaying city evoked memories of my childhood, familiar yet unsettling. Those past experiences I had tried to escape resurfaced in this foreign land, worn-out mattresses, peeling walls, indescribable smells.
I have a precious suitcase containing my cheap past, discarded clothes and bags, the old blankets that kept me warm as I grew up. I repeatedly wear them, touch them, just to confirm that the past me truly existed.
In Łódź, I felt my existence complete.
And also, I understood that paradise begins to disappear the moment it is seen.
