Do we celebrate birthdays by destroying the object that symbolises it?
I have an anthropological fascination with how humans utilise the act of sharing food to celebrate, create community and open a space for conversation. For this project, I followed a cake for three days through its cycle of life: production, collection and consumption. The work uses the cake as a vehicle to understand the rituals that unfold around it. I sat down at a table with four unknown people, with whom the cake was shared, and eventually brought down to crumbs.
